Kate was the subject of an interview by Adam Roberts of the Nelson Mail, a New Zealand newspaper, reposted here:

A Nelson woman has become the first New Zealand distributor for a solar oven product that can cook a roast chicken in three hours.

Kate Rowland, who also works as an administrator and installer for Solar Rosa Home, has become the first distributor of the Sunflair solar oven in New Zealand.

The oven cooks food by trapping ultraviolet rays from the sun and converting them into infrared rays, which heat the food as they are unable to escape the oven.

This means the sun’s heat or the outside temperature does not affect the oven’s ability to cook.

“You could be on a glacier and still cook.”

The oven heats up to about 65 degrees Celsius in 10 minutes, and can reach a maximum temperature of 130C.

Most recipes take between two and four hours to cook.

A cake could be baked in about two hours, while a roast chicken would take about three. The oven could also dry fruit.

“It’s nice when things take a long time because then you don’t have to hurry back for it.”

She was experimenting with recipes almost every day, working to create a cookbook for the oven, she said.

Nelson was an ideal location for solar cooking, with regular clear skies even in winter, and she estimated the oven could be used for about three-quarters of the year.

The product fitted well into a lot of markets, from camping to those who wanted to make their cooking more environmentally friendly, she said. Food cooked in the oven was also more healthy as all the moisture was retained.

Prepare.co.nz, NZ Survivor, and the Nelson Environment Centre had already bought several of the ovens, she said.

But she was keen to encourage people to use the ovens in their regular cooking. In summer I want people to not be using gas or electricity.”

Rowland said she had found out about the ovens when she was doing an online course on renewable energy a few months ago.

In the course of her research she realized there were none in New Zealand, so she approached the Sunflair company and eventually became their authorized saleswoman for the country.

Most customers wanted to use the device to move away from their reliance on gas or electricity.

The Sunflair would never need to be replaced, she said.

Rowland is setting up her own company, E Bright Energy, to sell sustainable products including the Sunflair.

Make Dried Apples or other fruit in a Sunflair Solar Oven. Here’s a great dried apple recipe.

Ingredients
Apples
Lemon Juice

Directions
1) Cut apples into 1/8 inch slices (3 mm). Slices should be as uniform as possible for even drying. Can either leave skin on or peel.
2) Soak apples in lemon juice for a few minutes. This helps prevent them from turning brown when drying.
3) Lay apple slices directly on the cooking rack(s). Leave space between them so air can circulate.
4) Put fruit in SUNFLAIR Solar Oven, leaving oven unzipped and well vented. Air circulation is important. Don’t worry about bugs getting in during the drying process. The heat will keep them away.
4) Dry until pliable but leathery (about 6 -8 hours for apples). To test dryness, let a piece cool, then squeeze it. If squeezing produces moisture, fruit is not dry.
5) Allow fruit to cool before storing.
Tips: The optimal drying temperature is between 130 – 140 F (55 – 60 C). The temperature should stay below 170 F (77 C), otherwise the fruit will cook instead of dry. This may require the oven to be angled more away from the sun.
During the first hour, watch for condensation buildup on the oven cover. If this happens, wipe with clean cloth.
Food dries best in low humidity (under 60%).
Experiment with other fruits: apricots, bananas, berries, tomatoes, etc. Remember that juicier fruits will have longer drying times.

Specially insulated oven reaches temperatures of up to 250 F (121 C). Compare to kitchen slow cookers that range between 180 – 300 F (82-149 C), and liken to a stovetop that reaches 212 F or 100 C (boiling) with simmering at 200 F (93 C). Slow cooker, dutch oven recipes adapt well with solar ovens. Four-season cooking below 40 degrees latitude, and three season above. A UV index of 4+ is best for solar cooking.

Makes delicious meals without the use of propane, charcoal, gas, or electricity. Saves money. Cuts utility bills. Eat healthier. No charcoal carcinogens. Solar cooked foods retain more nutrients and flavor. Perfect for emergencies. Cook during a power outage. Pasteurize water. Essential part of any bug-out bag. For efficiency, align cooking chamber to full sun, making sure shadow is positioned evenly behind oven.

Minor cosmetic imperfections, but still functions as intended. Imperfections could include: imperfect printing, sewing irregularities, no Velcro on wings, etc. Oven only. Pots, trays, racks, thermometer and WAPI sold separately.

Expand your SUNFLAIR® solar oven to feel more like a traditional kitchen oven with the deluxe set: a 3lb (1.36 kilo) round roaster, extra rack and extra baking, heat conducting tray. Cooks for 4-8.

SUNFLAIR solar ovens are affordable, fun and easy. They are the most portable and user friendly solar ovens. Weighing just over 3 lbs (1.36 kilos). Great for camping where fires are not allowed, boating, Rv-ing, emergency preparedness, keeping the heat out of the kitchen on a summer day, or crafts with the kids.

Specially insulated, oven reaches temperatures of up to 250 F (121 C). Compare to slow cookers that range between 180 – 300 F (82-149 C), and liken to a stovetop that reaches 212 F or 100 C (boiling) with simmering at 200 F (93 C).

Food retains more nutrients. Perfect for emergencies. Cook during a power outage. Pasteurize water. Essential part of any bug-out bag. For efficiency, align cooking chamber to full sun, making sure shadow is positioned evenly behind oven.
Folds to 2″ x 15.5″ x 19″ (5 x 39 x 48 cm.)
Includes: 1 solar oven, 2 collapsible silicone pots for portability, 1 3-lb (1.36 kilo) round roaster, 2 racks, 2 heat conducting/baking trays, 1 special solar oven thermometer, 1 WAPI (water pasteurization indicator), 1 carrying bag
